Brussels, Belgium
Our trip to Brussels was our final destination of our eight night trip to Amsterdam, Paris and Belgium. In Brussels we stayed a total of two nights, and had a full day and a half of exploring. Brussels is a cute, smaller city and I would not recommend more than two nights there. Our accommodations in Brussels was with air b n b, and this is where we and our favourite host.
Something good to know before travelling to Brussels, is that Belgium is known for 4 major things: Frites (fries), chocolate, waffles, and beer. Safe to say my diet was non existent in Brussels.
My favourite food in Brussels was their waffles. I had 3 in two days, and I would eat a million more if I could. They were SO GOOD!! There are two different types of waffles they offer which is: the Brussels waffles or the Liege Waffles. Since I tried the Brussels waffle first and loved it so much, I kept ordering that and didn’t try the Liege, but if I come back there is no doubt that I will! All three waffle places we went to I would highly recommend. They were called: Madison Dandoy (which is a chain, but you can only get the waffles at the store near the Grand Palace), Gaston, and Gaufres de Bruxelles.
Since chocolate is another one of Belgiums must haves, they have tons of chocolate stores you’ll need to check out! We chose to go to Mary’s Chocolatier which was incredible. Considering I have a nut allergy I wasn’t able to eat any chocolate, but this is where I did all my gift purchasing. Their customer service at Mary’s was fantastic. The employee that helped me was very kind, patient (as I hand chose the multiple selections of chocolate I was bringing back home) and knowledgeable. I found out Mary’s Chocolatier has been the official supplier for the royal family since 1942, and that all their chocolate is completely hand made. So after a great experience here, I would definitely recommend. Something that also looked interesting and fun was signing up for a chocolate tour. To my understanding it is a tour that takes you to all different chocolatiers in the area and you get to taste many different kinds!
ATTN: BEER LOVERS: Delirium Cafe is a place you want to check out! I wish I liked beer during my time in Belgium since this is the third thing they are known for. Even though I don’t have a love for beer, we had to check out Delirium Café. This place sets a world record of having more than 2000 types of beer. I found Delirium Café pretty cool because it is an entire small street of all different bars. Most of their bars were dedicated for beer, but you could also find some of their bars specializing in vodka, and tequila. That’s where you could find me!
Something random, but good to know is that in a lot of restaurants in Brussels, they don’t offer English menus. This is because their main languages are French, Dutch and German. So with English being my only language, I had a hard time. I found that almost all employees were able to speak English, and most of them spoke it pretty well. At almost every restaurant we went to, they were kind enough to translate the menu into English for us which was very helpful. All we had to do was ask.
The two main attractions in Brussels that we went and checked out, was the Grand Palace and the Comic strip walls. The Grand Palace is a must. We walked there from our air b n b, and its architecture is absolutely beautiful. We knew right away we were in the right place when we got there because of how big and beautiful it is. There are so many restaurants and patios in that area, so to take this amazing view in we sat on one of the patios and enjoyed some wine while enjoying the view. The comic strip walls was something that was also cool. We were able to see around 4 different street paintings which were so well done. They were all pretty close together in distance which made it worth while.
For transportation, Brussels was the one place where we didn’t use public transit. Since Brussels is smaller city, we were able to walk almost everywhere. If you bring comfy walking shoes, and it’s not raining, walking is totally doable and enjoyable. We also used Uber here which was a great back up for when we didn’t feel like walking, or we had our luggage with us.
Overall, we really enjoyed our time in Brussels. This was my favourite place to eat out of all 3 destinations we travelled to, and it is a very beautiful city. As I mentioned earlier, I wouldn’t recommend more than two nights here as you can probably accomplish everything you want to do in two days time.
If you or anyone is travelling to Brussels anytime soon, or are thinking of it, feel free to message me with any questions you have!
