Prince Edward County Getaway

It’s finally here.

The getaway weekend to Prince Edward County that you have been looking forward too. You’re spending your two night vacation at the boutique hotel, Merrill House. As you enter the hotel, and explore around you quickly realize each room is as picturesque as the one it’s next too.

You walk up the flight of stairs to your room and feel a rush of happiness. The first thing you notice is beautiful rose petals laid out in a shape of a heart. There is also a small complimentary bottle of wine waiting for you to enjoy, looking refreshing as ever sitting on ice. There is only one explanation for this. The staff remembered this was your anniversary weekend. Your significant other, is as joyous as you are. Their smile reassures you that going out of your way to tell the staff about your anniversary celebration was worth it. The wine bottle gets opened, and you cheer each other to a start of a great and memorable weekend away. One that you have both deserved for quite some time now.

Your weekend getaway starts now.

COUNTY CIDER COMPANY:

The first thing you have planned for your getaway is a cider tasting at County Cider Company.  For us it was around a 15 minute drive from Merrill House, and they recommend booking a reservation in advance for the tasting. Cider Tastings are $10 per person and our tasting consisted of tasting 5 different local ciders. There was a good range of dry and sweet ciders, and my favourite was the Feral Cider. It was sweet, and also happened to be my favourite colour pink. I usually only see original apple ciders in local restaurants, so it was great to see and experience something different. County Cider Company also has a retail store, so we were able to purchase some cider after our tasting to enjoy at a later time.

FLOSSIE’S SANDWICHES:

After seeing how incredible Flossie’s Sandwiches looked via Instagram, I knew I had to go try it out myself. We had the pleasure to be served by Kyle, ( who is the owner of Flossies) and he was amazing. His customer service skills were exceptional and he made some great recommendations. I enjoyed the vegetarian Eggplant Parmesan sandwich also known as the Nicky San-Meat-toro, and it was awesome. Thinking about how delicious that sandwich was is making me wish I had one right now. I upgraded my fries with smoked tomato Ragu sauce on top and that was super tasty as well. John ordered the Gillingham Water Buffalo Burger and he enjoyed every single bite of it. Kyle explained to us how all the proteins they use at Flossie’s are all local. Flossie’s also works with a bunch of other local partners for beverages, and our favourite was the Hibiscus Cranberry Apple from Arroyo. If you’re looking for a good place to eat delicious food that also has good music and good vibes, definitely make sure to stop by Flossie’s.

THE VIC:

After enjoying the wood burning fire place in the Dreaming Suite, we had a good night sleep and when we woke up we drove down to The Vic for breakfast. This restaurant is every foodie’s dream. From the Instagrammable and tasty food, to the diner themed restaurant, many fun photo opportunities await. This was my first time experiencing a Breakfast Poutine, and it was John’s first time having Eggs Benedict on potato cakes. We enjoyed both of our meals, and this is a restaurant I would recommend to anyone looking for a fun, laid back experience.

HIKING/ WALKING THE MILLENNIUM TRAIL:

The weather was beautiful, and we wanted to take advantage of it. We drove to Millennium Trail which is a 5-10 minute drive from Merrill House, we parked our car on the side of the road (considering there were no designated parking lots), and walked the trail. Our walk was 1 hour round trip and also would have been a great place to bring a long our furry friend! We left our puppy at home for this getaway, but it’s nice to know this trail is a dog friendly option.

NORMAN HARDIE WINERY:

If you want the best wood oven pizza you need to visit Norman Hardie Winery. We got the Dolcé e Piccante pizza, and it was heavenly. A good thing to know is their pizza oven is only open from May- late fall. After our meal we enjoyed a wine tasting, and since I’m a red wine lover my favourite was the County Pinot Noir 2017. It costs only $5 per person to receive a tasting which includes three wines. We had our tasting reservation booked in advance, and with the beautiful weather, and gorgeous sunset around it made for a very memorable experience.

555 BREWING:

If one of your favourite food combos are pizza and beer, you need to visit 555 Brewing. When you go there you will see on their menu that they number their pizza’s instead of names. We got the #3 and #6 pizza’s, and the #3 which was a Hawaiian style pizza, ended up being my favourite. We received great service, and I loved how genuine and honest our server was. Nowadays that can be so hard to find, so we appreciated her very much.

BREAKFAST AT MERRILL HOUSE:

On the day of our departure, we knew we couldn’t end our Prince Edward County Getaway trip without experiencing breakfast at the Merrill House. The atmosphere was perfect and romantic, service was friendly and efficient and our food was delicious. This was my first experience ever trying french press coffee, and as soon as we arrived back home I went out and bought our own french press coffee maker. If you haven’t had it, it’s delicious! We started our dining experience with the coffee, freshly squeezed orange juice, croissants and two fresh bowls of fruit. When we were finished with that, we ordered the Lemon Ricotta Pancakes with Blueberry Compote and savoured every bite. This breakfast was the perfect way to end our getaway to Prince Edward County.

Overall, we had an incredible two night getaway to PEC. Everything worked out wonderfully, and we had fun everywhere we went. Since we went during the off season (at the beginning of November) , the town was quite and peaceful. It was the perfect getaway from our busy lives, was exactly what we both needed, and something we will always remember.

If you are looking for a short, fun getaway experience add Prince Edward County to your list!

Feel free to check out some of the photo’s from our trip down below, and ask any questions in the comments and I can help out in any way I can.

XO,

Courtney
